Carlos Julião's Depiction of Las Bolsas Mandingas

These depictions of the bolsa de mandinga on the necks of street vendors in Colonial Rio de Janeiro show how the talismans were prevalent within Brazilian societies. Enslaved vendors and freedmen alike wore the bolsa da mandinga in order to shield themselves from wordly evils.
